A WAR THAT IS IN FACT UNLAWFUL
Since it is apparent the hostilities between Israel and its assorted neighbors will not soon fade away, please allow me to indulge you with a bit of an analogy. Just suppose that Ross Perot's Independent Party, being unsatisfied with the political status quo in the United States, negotiated agreements with Canada and Cuba which not only provided him a supply of weapons and material support but also financed his military attacks on us from Mexico, a nation without the military or civil power to resist this incursion.
Does that not sound familiar? If not, you have not been paying attention because that is precisely what is happening to Israel as Syria and Iran are supporting the paramilitary arm of the political party, Hezbollah, which is targeting Israeli cities and civilian populations with rockets fired from Lebanon.
That this is a violation of international law is clearly a no-brainer to anyone who has progressed beyond the 3d grade inasmuch as a political entity which launches lethal attacks against a sovereign state is engaging in criminal activity, little different from organized street gangs, the Symbionese Liberation Army and any other antiestablishment movement in the United States. Regardless of high-minded and passionate platitudes regarding past and present oppression, the indiscriminate employment of explosives to produce death and terror among a civil populace is impossible to justify.
It is likewise beyond comprehension that even those who are unilaterally opposed to Israel or those who are merely armchair critics can condemn that nation for causing collateral damage and civilian casualties for defending itself against aggression, but totally ignore Hezbollah's deliberate targeting of Israel's populated areas. Casualties of war, whether civilian or military, are always deplorable; however, the denial of any nation's option of self defense because it might result in bloodshed is patently absurd.
That war is an abhorrent exercise in death and destruction.....the product of either failed diplomacy or unremitting evil and hatred.....is beyond question........ nevertheless; it is unfortunately sometimes necessary in defense of liberty and freedom. The right of a nation to defend itself against an attack such as that on Pearl Harbor or the Twin Towers is a legitimate response to a war perpetrated by another power, as is Israel's action against Hezbollah's incursion.
While it may come as a shock to some, there are international rules of warfare which are expected to be honored by civilized nations. Military service is an honorable profession and a nation's armed forces must conduct combat operations in a manner which destroys its enemy's ability and will to fight while also minimizing civilian casualties and guaranteeing humane treatment of casualties and prisoners of war. There will always be unintended consequences in warfare, accidental as well as criminal in nature, but any civilized country will attempt to minimize the former and punish the latter.
The intentional launching of weapons against a civil populace while employing the population of that area from which the aggression occurred as a shield is neither honorable nor within the rules established by the Law of Land Warfare. And, it is equally dishonorable to claim foul when the opponent responds in kind by attacking the positions from which the rockets originated while the original aggressor accepts no responsibility for the civilian casualties it deliberately inflicted.
War is an abominable but sometimes a very necessary evil. Its rules require certain conditions to be met and practiced.....none of which are acknowledged by Hezbollah. There may be honor among thieves but it is nonexistent in this marauding, stateless band of terrorist thugs....... every civilized nation should join in its eradication.
