I've seen some bumper stickers that say "Kinky Friedman. Why the Hell not?" Seriously, Texans. Is that how you want people to determine who they vote for? By the finicky "why not?" argument? Puhlease.
So far, one of his biggest arguments for himself seems to be that he's neither a Republican nor a Democrat. I say pick a party and stick with it. Change it from within. No party will ever be perfect, so it's best to go with the one you agree with most.
After perusing Kinky's website, I must say that he sounds like a Democrat with his statistical analysis of education and healthcare in Texas.
On Healthcare he states:
"Texas ranks rock-bottom in providing for the basic needs of its youngest and poorest residents. More than one fifth of Texas children have no health insurance at all. "Democrat Chris Bell says on his website:
Texas has the highest rate of uninsured adults and children in the US. One in four (25%) adults do not have insurance coverage – 5.6 million. The national average is 15 percent).Governor Rick Perry states:
Access to affordable professional medical care is important to all Texans. To this end Governor Perry consistently supported new professional medical schools to meet the growing health needs of Texans, led efforts to keep doctors and nurses from having to fight frivolous lawsuits in court instead of delivering health care, and promoted options for small employers to more easily offer private insurance coverage to employees. How does Kinky Freidman sound any different than Chris Bell? Sounds to me like Rick Perry is the one with no nonsense ideas to have government help the healthcare industry. IMO, the government shouldn't be involved with healthcare except at a minimum, not a maximum.
Kinky's ideas to "solving" healthcare isn't much different than any other Socialist Democrat running for any other office in the country. Raise taxes, raise fees on HMOs and try to institute nationalist healthcare in Texas. Kinky's TexasCare plan is one reason why the hell not.
Next, we have education and once again Kinky sounds more like Democrat Chris Bell than an Independent. Both websites say the education system is failing Texan children and what a terrible tragedy it is. What neither seems to admit is that for the past ten years, Republican legislators and governors have been trying to clean up a Democratic mess regarding education. Up until just recently, Texas was run by liberal Democrats, and it's just difficult to clean up bureaucratic messes in no-time flat, especially when Democrats like Martin Frost are stonewalling your every move.
The truth is that education in Texas has gotten much better and just because Governor Perry's opponents say it isn't so doesn't make it not so.
What is Kinky's proposal for "solving" education? "Slots for Tots" (more gambling), Increasing teacher salaries (which have gone up the last two years w/o Kinky), more taxes on oil and gas companies, closing "corporate" loopholes (??might be right about that one??), abolishing the TAKS test (ie. take away accountability in education).
The last Kinky education proposal is stated as "Outsourcing sports funding to sports companies/retailers". What? Is he saying that sports should be taken out of the public school and we should give into all advertising? Maybe to subsidize, but not as a main income, and they're already doing that. After Sports, Music Education would be the next to go, and in my mind, that makes Kinky Friedman enemy #1. There's another why the hell not.
Another interesting tidbit that I found on Kinky's website is that he used to "question the sport of hunting but no longer". Unfortunately, it took him all the way until October 16 and the apparent persuasion of many hunters and fishermen in the state of Texas to get him to change his mind. Ban hunting! Why the hell not?!
Kinky is pro-abortion. Kinky is for state funding of stem cell research (notice he does not distinguish between adult, fetal donated and aborted fetus stem cells). Kinky is for gay marriage.
Things that Kinky says he's for that might be in the more moderate to conservative range in politics is that he is pro-2nd amendment (but I would be wary of gun control laws), he says he would put the National Guard on the Mexican border (very popular, I'm sure), he is ambiguous at best on capital punishment, and he is for gay equality rights (I agree that all people should be treated with respect, but how far would he go with the political correctness end of it?). However, the only one of these issues that he would have any real say towards is putting the National Guard on the border. Whether or not he'd go through with it and to what extent is anyone's guess.
Finally, Kinky is against the Trans-Texas Corridor. My message to people about this issue has to do with history. Back in the pre-1900s, there were once good sized cities and towns with all kinds of river crossings like ferries and bridges, and you would have to pay a toll to cross them. When the train companies were making plans where to build their train tracks, they approached these places as a possible route for their trains. Those who said "yes" to the trains are still on the map today. Those who said "no" are now mostly ghosttowns if they still exist at all. Washington-on-the-Brazos is a prime example.
Does Kinky really want Texas to fall into the dustbin of history as the state that could have been? That Corridor will be built, whether its Trans-Texas, Trans-New Mexico, Trans-Arizona or Trans-California. Heck, they could even Trans-Canada the whole thing.
How about this bumper sticker? "Kinky Friedman. Hell no!"
